YVR Announces Construction in Templeton Park during COVID-19 Pandemic

Midway through the Prime Minister’s address to Canadians this morning, outlining the extreme measures that are underway to contain the spread of COVID-19, YVR informed the residents of Burkville that construction would begin in Templeton Park. YVR dropped flyers in everyone’s mailbox.

Many residents have just returned from travelling and are self-quarantined in their homes for the next 14 days. Other residents are either working at home or staying at home with their children. Homes that are directly adjacent to Templeton Street. YVR stated that they will be starting with “demolition and clearing works along Templeton Street.” The construction that will increase airborne particles and pathogens.

It just doesn’t make sense. It is a scary time, and this added stress is too much for the residents of our small community.

Things YVR “Forgot” To Tell the Community of Burkeville

This morning YVR announced that it will be detouring cyclist and pedestrian traffic from Templeton Road to Wellington Crescent. They have made this decision with zero public consultation.

Wellington is a narrow, single-lane residential road with lots of kids and dogs. Adding large group of speeding cyclists is a recipe for accidents. Is YVR willing to accept liability for this? Or are they forcing the City of Richmond to accept liability?

YVR also announced that they will be tearing down the fence between Burkeville and Templeton Park. Full details are available at https://www.yvr.ca/en/passengers/construction/construction-updates/templeton-area-redevelopment-2020-site-work-overview

Sunny Weather Brings Out YVR Construction Noise

One of the residents of Burkeville sent us a video this morning demonstrating the noise that was permeating through the entire house. It started at 7:30 a.m. and was still going strong at 9:30 a.m. She had to put the family in the car and leave.

A number of neighbours sent in formal complaints to the YVR Noise Line and then this happened. It is like YVR is INTENTIONALLY creating noise to force the neighbours out. #showsomecompassion #peoplelivehere #beabetterneighbour.

And then it continued!!! There is no stopping the disruption for these poor residents.

YVR Spends Money to Clean a Closed Road

This video shows what the residents along Wellington Crescent have been listening to all day. It is a bit confusing because YVR put up signs that Templeton Road is closed. When we spoke to them about the street cleaning, they replied, “We acknowledge that construction and site work is disruptive and understand that you feel disrespected. YVR and our contractors do not conduct work with the intention of disturbing residents in Burkeville.”

However Templeton Road is closed and they went on to say “The work that you have referenced was in relation to ongoing work for the Little Wings Daycare development, which resulted in dirt accumulating on the road. We requested that the contractor clean the road to ensure that access was maintained for safe cycling and pedestrian access.”

Acces, no access? Is it closed or open? Do you intentionally disrupt us or not? Do you care or not really care?

YVR admits, “We expect the demolition and milling of the asphalt to be noisy work.”

It is about to get a whole lot noisier for the residents along Wellington.

YVR is not apologizing and even threw the contractors under the bus.  On the website, YVR states that ” Construction will take place weekdays between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM with noisier work scheduled after 7:30 AM. There will be excavators, haul trucks, compactors, milling and paving machines, as well as miscellaneous trucks and crews on site. We are working with the contractor to apply white noise alarms on equipment wherever possible for this work. However, this is new technology and not all contractors can adhere, so normal back up alarms will be heard. We expect the demolition and milling of the asphalt to be noisy work which is scheduled to take place December 10 to 13, 2019.”

Happy Holidays Burkeville.

YVR Creates Traffic Nightmare At Their Own Airport

Good luck getting out of Burkeville today! Years of planning, YVR said “we have learned from the past”. Yet today, you can’t get anywhere near the airport because of the Black Friday shoppers at the Macarthur Designer Outlet, Richmond Vancouver International Airport What a mess! Cars are actually cutting through the lane behind Burkeville to get through.

YVR has asked their own employees working on Sea Island to take SkyTrain for the next few days.

This is EXACTLY why we don’t trust Vancouver International Airport to respect Templeton Park and Burkeville.  It is all about revenue not community. #peopleoverparcels

YVR Scraping Templeton Road For Dust?

For the past two days, YVR has been scraping Templeton Road. You can see the front-end loader operator scraping the road, lifting the bucket and dumping nothing. This is the first video of three but it just defies logic.

The operator is accomplishing nothing while making a ridiculous amount of noise and creating a huge amount of dust. There was no dirt collected during the work.

It’s almost like YVR is trying to desensitize us by making extra noise…

Is this a bored worker? Is he running down the clock? Does he actually get paid for this?

Once he realized that someone was recording the insanity, he took off. It is no wonder that Craig Richmond is retiring.

Your Neighbours in Burkeville Are Suffering

YVR Construction Noise – November 22, 2019

Today at 8:15 a.m. YVR started moving dirt from one side of Templeton Park to the other. The noise is unbearable and, even in a newer house, there is no escaping the noise and vibration of the heavy equipment.

YVR is not giving us any notice so we can make arrangements to be out of the house. It is random and on their schedule. It is making our lives very difficult.

Please take a moment to support your neighbours and let YVR know that we stand together and this is not acceptable.

Noise Along Wellington Crescent

The old works building adjacent Templeton Park is now down and YVR is using numerous excavators to crush the concrete into smaller pieces to haul away. As you can imagine, it is very uncomfortable to live along Wellington Crescent.

Residents have been taking their kids to family members’ or incurring the cost of daycare.  People who work from home have been spending time at Starbucks or incurring the cost of renting temporary office space.  With the warm weather, we have been forced to keep our doors and windows shut throughout the day.  The constant noise is causing headaches and the dust is making it hard to breathe.

If you are thinking, “I am so glad I don’t live over there” then please share your compassion for your fellow neighbours and let YVR know that this kind of disruption for the next 4 years is unacceptable.  Take a walk during the day to Templeton Park and experience what we are living through Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

While this project is temporary and will, hopefully, be completed at the end of October – the building of a new logistics centre is going to take 4 years.  The current activity is only a fraction of what is to come.

Please take the time to let YVR know that this is not acceptable.  Either by email noise@yvr.ca, online at http://www.yvr.ca/en/about-yvr/noise-management/noise-complaint-form or by telephone 604-207-7097

On behalf of the residents along Wellington Crescent, we say thank you for supporting us.

An Open Letter to Anne Murray, Vice President, YVR Airline Business Development and Public Affairs

After a recent post, we received a letter from a long-time Burkeville resident:

It’s been 3 months since YVR cut down 13 glorious trees in Templeton Park.  Since the first night without the trees, it became immediately apparent that those trees had been muffling the airplane noise and creating a protective buffer for Burkeville. I am a sound sleeper, always have been.  However, since the trees have been gone I can hear every plane pull up, run up and unload.  It has never been this noisy.  It’s like I can hear the actual cargo doors open and close.

I haven’t slept consistently since.  I can’t concentrate, I have no energy, I feel irritated, anxious and my skin looks tired.  My friend told me to put a fan in my bedroom as the white noise might help me sleep, it did not.  I bought a sound machine thinking that, perhaps, the crickets and crashing waves would help, it did not.  The windows are closed, I have thick noise cancelling drapes. Nothing helps.

Tonight, I find myself standing at the kitchen sink with a sleeping pill in hand.

I first met Anne Murray at the YVR/Burkeville Open House held last summer at the Sea Island School.  I was speaking with a YVR representative regarding Templeton Road and YVR’s plans to have the road run through to No. 2 Road.  Anne Murray was confrontational out of the gate.  She shut me down before I finished my sentence. She didn’t even allow her colleague to finish speaking.  It was aggressive.
