Ground Run-up Enclosure ONLY Applicable to 50% of Planes

Since the trees have been cut down, the noise along the Wellington laneway has noticeably increased.

In December, 2012, the Vancouver Airport Authority installed a $12 million ground run-up enclosure (GRE) adjacent to Burkeville, behind the trees that where removed. “Engine run-ups are particularly bothersome to the community because they are done at night, often at high power and often for extended periods of time,” explains Anne Murray, Vice President, Airline Business Development and Public Affairs at YVR. “We knew this was a concern for the community and we looked at what sorts of things we could do to address that.”

One of our neighbours recently wrote to YVR to say that the noise was keeping her up at night and she received this response from Mark Christopher Cheng, M.Eng. (mech), Supervisor Noise Abatement at YVR,  “We have had incidents in past years of aircraft maintenance engineers either getting lost on the airfield while taxiing or displaying a lack of knowledge of the airfield layout. This is of particular concern, especially when operating on controlled surfaces.

Vancouver Sun Covers Templeton Park Candlelight Vigil

A big thank you to Tiffany Crawford at the Vancouver Sun for her story on our candlelight vigil for the trees that YVR cut down. She captured the essence of this struggle, how will Burkeville survive 3 – 4 years of construction? We won’t be able to live in our homes. Health Canada has to step in.

Richmond News Covers Templeton Park Candlelight Vigil

What a great article in the Richmond News about last night’s vigil!! Thank you Richmond News. One correction, the 300 meters should read 60 meters from our back yard. We wish it was 300 meters!!!

CityTV To Attend Templeton Candelight Vigil

https://www.citynews1130.com/video/2019/03/28/grieving-greenery/

City TV was in Burkeville today and had a great interview with long time resident, Marg Robins. Since the trees have come down, the noise has increased and two Bald Eagles have been circling the park, it looks like they may have lost their home.

Templeton Park Candlelight Vigil Set For March 29th at 8:00 p.m.

We are arranging  a candlelight vigil at Templeton Park where the old trees used to stand.  Friday, March 29th, 2019 at 8:00 p.m.  The community of Burkeville is outraged and has been quite devastated by YVR’s swift and calculated destruction of some majestic, 50 year old trees.

City TV is preparing a brief interview for the 6:00 p.m. news this evening and will be in attendance with a camera crew for the vigil. We expect a great turnout and want to show YVR and the new tenant that we are not giving up on our community!

We hope to see you there!

YVR Continues To Go Behind Our Backs

“Representatives with the Vancouver Airport Authority informed Richmond city council during the meeting that YVR is not in favour of a nighttime curfew on airport operations due to its geographical seat on the west coast of North America, and there is potential to expand evening flight operations.”

According to YVR, a total of 920 aeronautical noise concerns from 250 individuals in Metro Vancouver were reported throughout 2018, representing a 29% decrease in the number of concerns over the same period in 2017. Nearly half (457 out of 920) of the total number of reports were made by just three people in Richmond regarding jet departures and run-ups during the overnight hours.

YVR is not listening

It appears that YVR saw our signs and have added their own. This sign just went up on Airport Road. Unfortunately it still contains details about a community green, social commons, and a south connection. All the things we OPPOSED and brought up at the most recent meeting at the Pacific Gateway Hotel. All the things we are AGAINST, they put on a huge sign. YVR is not listening.

How can YVR put a sign on City of Richmond property and we have to put our signs on private property??

Health Concerns for Burkeville Residents

On Sunday, a group of residents who live along Wellington Crescent met with Richmond Councillor Michael Wolfe in our backyard.  We walked out to the lane so he could see, first hand, the proximity of the proposed logistics facility.  He had only viewed the drawings provided by YVR and was quite shocked to see just how close it is to our neighbourhood.

We told him that in order to prepare the site, YVR would pre-load the location with sand.  This process requires them to pile the sand as high as the proposed building to prevent the building from settling during construction.  As residents, we are quite aware that the prevalent wind is a north westerly.  This means that the jet fuel-contaminated sand will be blowing directly into our homes and our lungs.

Councillor Wolfe saw this as an immediate health concern and invited us to attend the Public Safety meeting yesterday.  We were given an opportunity to speak and Council agreed that our next step would be to speak to Vancouver Coastal Health and Health Canada.  This would also allow us to, perhaps, apply for an injunction to stop construction until these health concerns are addressed.
